Since my brain can't comprehend aleph-n, when n>1, the joke refers to ℵ1, in equivalence to the set of Real numbers. Same as the number of Math geeks who have ever stuck their fingers in lightbulbs (spread across a "continuum" of parallel universes, which, as it turns out, correspond to a set of cardinality ℵ1. Thus this subset of chosen people has the same cardinality as the collection itself... provided you accept the Axiom of Choice.) It's Cantor Dust in the wind. We're all just dust in the wind.

Does your husband have this disease too? Not sure we can occupy the same space at the same time without creating a singularity. But I'm willing to tempt fate.

Personally, I think Carter got a bad rap because of bad times -- I commend him particularly for his stance on the national debt (which he also got railed for).

Nearly a year ago, I listened to an author interview on NPR about the Garfield assassination. I still haven't gotten the book, though it's a fascinating story. It's on my very long "need to read" list. Now, if I just had the extra time.

Belladona was the harridan who lived with the vultures on a high aerie overlooking the fishing village below. People in the village walked around her, and for good cause. No mere bedlamite, she. She was mistress of darker works. One night the constable encountered her on one of her feared evening peregrinations She croaked at him, "Sir, I offer you more than mere lucre for the callan you're holding.in your gaol."

"What? That Dutch lad we found climbing down the hawser from the vessel docked over yonder? I need get the deserter back to his captain at dawn so he can be off before the tidal bore comes sluicing up the channel. What louche purpose have you with him?"

"I need him for my own ends. Here, I offer you this nephrite amulet, given me by a croupier in the city. I had means to fulfill his nefarious desideratum (what, I am not at liberty to say.) I shall create a lacuna in the captain's memory, and he'll not bother you. Your sinecure here is safe."

The constable, transfixed by the beauty of the amulet, took it from her and crossed himself -- a perhaps-futile apotropaic gesture in the face of the fulvous evil to which he'd condemned the young callan, Hans, still sleeping peacefully in his cell.

Had to look up swivet (but I didn't look in a book :)

I think BN's other front in the fight against Amazon is toys. AT BN on West Gray the toy section keeps growing, crowding out the books. (And since Weingarten forced out one of our last independent toy stores - wasn't highbrow enough for West Gray apparently - maybe we need some toys on that street.)
