Forget those saccharine Chopin Nocturnes, the Nocturnes by John Field are the real shizzle. The influence of Field, 30 years Chopin’s senior, resonated with the Polish ex-pat, as well as the other romantics –Brahms, Schumann, etc.

I found a vinyl LP (my favorite medium these days) of the complete Field Nocturnes. Mind-blowingly beautiful. I’m working on #5 now.  And yes, I called Chopin’s Nocturnes saccharine. The etudes, preludes, waltzes, and ballades are a thing of genius, but I never cared much for his night-time works. Now I have a replacement.

Here’s the LP, by the way, on Nonesuch records featuring the ridiculously wonderful pianist Noel Lee.
