Shirley Horn’s Here’s To Life is transcendent; it’s a recording that deserves your full attention. Lush sonics, gut-wrenching lyrics, subtle orchestral pads that sneak under Ms. Horn’s sultry delivery, both vocally and on her Steinway — all of it fits together to create one of the most stunning recordings I’ve ever heard. Ever. Period. Amen.

I had the honor of watching her perform at Yoshi’s in Oakland in the early 90’s. She was grumpy and complained constantly about being rushed through dinner. “I’m hungry”, she kept saying. But the performance was wonderful, of course. No one will ever play like her. Her timing especially was unrivaled, taking slow to a new level of smoothness.

Funny, I’m not the only one who feels this way: on Amazon, 59/60 customer reviews are 5-stars:
